Sewer Smoke Testing

Iowa Rural Water will be conducting smoke tests of sanitary sewers in Granger on Thursday, April 19th. This will NOT include the following areas: Windcrest Development, Twin Eagles Development, Lowell Street, Maple Street, Birch Street and White Oak Lane. These tests will assist in locating breaks and defects in the sewer system. YOU MAY SEE SMOKE COMING FROM VENT STACKS ON BUILDINGS OR FROM HOLES IN THE GROUND. Don’t be alarmed. The smoke has no odor, is non-toxic, non-staining, does not create a fire hazard and will dissipate in a few minutes. Before they conduct the smoke test, please pour water into your basement floor drains and into any unused sinks. This will seal the drain traps so that smoke will not enter your building through the drain. If smoke should enter your building during the test, it probably means that there are defects in the plumbing that could allow DANGEROUS SEWER GAS to enter. Note the location of the smoke and call City Hall at 515-999-2210 to arrange a meeting with our inspector. Open doors and windows to ventilate any smoke that enters the building. If it rains, Iowa Rural Water will reschedule and we will inform you of the new date. More information can be found on the PINK door knockers that will be put on your doors Monday, April 16th or Tuesday, April 17th. So please check your front door on Monday or Tuesday to see if you qualify for the test. If you have any questions, please contact City Hall. Thank you!
